Day One - Helleborus 'Niger'

Day One of my '365 days of flowers' project!

Starting us off is the Helleborus 'Niger' otherwise know as Hellebore or Christmas Rose.

You would normally find these plants growing on a mountain amongst the snow but they are ideal for our gardens back home.

Even though they are called a Christmas Rose they don't normally flower at Christmas. The flowering period is around January - March but some varieties flower earlier (like this one).

They like a shade - semi shade spot & are winter hardy.

Old folklore says that they are called a Christmas Rose because one sprouted in the snow from the tears of a young girl who had no gift to give the Christ child in Bethlehem.

They are also available as a cut flower which are just as pretty x
